Traditional Etching Booking Request

Less Toxic etching with Baldwin’s Ink Ground and Copper Sulphate solution.
BIG is made from beeswax and ink and contains none of the arsenic, lead or mercury found in traditional etching grounds, which may be inhaled or absorbed through the skin. It is also more versatile in that one substance may be used as hard or soft ground, for aquatint, sugarlift and various other effects.

Claims for the non-toxicity of ferric chloride have been discredited and noxious gases are produced by reaction with the various metals. Copper sulphate solution, however, produces just small amounts of harmless hydrogen, by reaction with steel, zinc and aluminium and can safely be used with quick results outside the fume cupboard.

This day course is for those new to etching, experienced etchers and those who want to be able to prepare their plates at home. Besides the opportunity to try out the new materials, you will be provided with the information necessary to make up your own mordants. You will use hard and soft ground methods on zinc plates, with aquatint if time permits.
